Are Your Parents Really Fine in the House? Start Here.

“We’re fine.” It’s what most parents say when you ask about the house.

Here’s the short answer. You can’t tell from a phone call. You find out by noticing how the house works for them on an ordinary day.

In my new post on downsizing in Calgary, I walk through what to quietly look for next time you visit, why the house might be the problem and not your parents, and how to bring it up without it landing like a verdict.

Read it here: Downsizing in Calgary: How Do You Know if Your Parents Are Okay at Home?

You don’t have to do anything yet. Noticing is enough for now.

Downsizing in Calgary? Start With the Distance to the Grandkids.

Most empty nesters aren’t scared of a smaller home. They’re scared of a longer drive to the grandkids.

Good news. You can downsize in Calgary and still live close to family. Start with how far is too far, then look for a smaller home inside that circle.

My latest post covers how to test the drive, how to stay on the same side of the city as your kids, and what to do if the grandkids live somewhere else.

Read it here: Downsizing in Calgary: Can You Move and Still Live Close to the Grandkids?

No rush. The timing can be next spring or five years from now.

Downsizing in Calgary? You May Not Have to Move.

Everyone asks the same thing once the kids are gone. Do we have to sell the house?

Short answer: no. If you like your home, can manage it and can afford it, you can stay. Downsizing is a choice, not a deadline.

My full post covers how to tell if staying put still works, the small signs it might be time to look, and what to do if you’re not sure yet.

Read it here: Downsizing in Calgary: Do You Actually Have to Move?

No pressure. Think about it for a year, or five. And staying is a good answer too.

Bungalow, Villa or Condo? Start Here.

Choosing a smaller home gets confusing fast. Three kinds of home, three sets of trade-offs.

Here’s the short answer. A bungalow gives you one floor. A villa gives you one floor and less outside work. A condo gives you the least to look after.

My full post on downsizing in Calgary covers what each one really means, how to tell which fits the way you live now, and what to do if you’re not ready to give up your yard.

Read it here: Downsizing in Calgary: Bungalow, Villa or Condo, Which Fits You?

No rush. If the house still works for you, that’s a good answer too.

Downsizing in Calgary? Start With the Junk Drawer.

Thirty years of stuff is a lot to face.

Here’s the short answer. Sort it in small rounds. Start with the things that carry no feeling. Leave the hard things for last.

Downsizing is about 80% emotion and only 20% real estate, and the stuff is where you feel it most.

My longer post covers where to start, what to do with the things you can’t let go of, and what happens when your kids don’t want the dining set.

Read it here: Downsizing in Calgary: What Do You Do With Thirty Years of Stuff?

No rush, and no need to call me. Read it when you’re ready, even if the move is years away.

Bringing Up Downsizing With Your Parents in Calgary? Start Here.

You’ve noticed the stairs before they have.

Bringing up downsizing with your parents in Calgary can feel like walking into a minefield. Here’s the short version. Ask a question. Don’t hand them a plan.

Start with curiosity, not a solution. Pick a quiet moment, and let them talk first. If they say no, that’s normal. Drop it and bring it up again in a few months.

This isn’t your decision to make for them. Your job is to open the door, not walk through it for them.

Read it here: Downsizing in Calgary: How Do You Bring It Up With Your Parents?

And if your parents aren’t ready this year, that’s fine too. This is a conversation you can have more than once.

Downsizing From a Two-Storey in Calgary? Start Here

If the stairs feel a little longer than they used to, this one’s for you.

I wrote a new post on my downsizing blog about where to start when you’re leaving a two-storey in Calgary.

The short version?

Start with the life, not the house.

Figure out where you want to wake up. Close to the grandkids. Near your favourite walk. All on one floor.

The boxes can wait. So can the listing.

The full post covers what to do with 30 years of stuff, whether you have to leave your neighbourhood, and when it makes sense to start.

Read it here: Downsizing From a Two-Storey in Calgary: Where Do You Even Start?

And if you read it and decide to stay put for now? That’s a good answer too.
